WRI will host a moderated peer panel featuring school district and pupil transportation representatives from across New York State (and potentially one out-of-state representative) who have direct experience implementing and operating electric school buses. The discussion will focus on practical, implementation-oriented insights and lessons from the field and will be structured around the question: What actually changes when a district begins operating electric buses, and what stays the same?
Panelists will share candid insights on day-to-day operations, maintenance, planning timelines, working with utilities, and lessons learned during early deployments. The goal is to provide transportation staff with realistic expectations, peer insights, and practical takeaways they can apply in districts of all sizes across New York.

Derek Graham, a distinguished national speaker specializing in school transportation topics, former North Carolina State Director, and Past President of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation, will present on the effectiveness of lap/shoulder belts on school buses. Derek will provide insights based on recommendations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and present case studies of school transportation accidents that have revitalized discussions regarding lap/shoulder belts on school buses.

The session will center on three practical areas frequently raised by New York districts: charging and infrastructure planning (including coordination with utilities), day-to-day operations and maintenance, and engaging school leadership and communities during the transition. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss challenges with peers and share approaches that have worked in different districts. The goal is to provide practical strategies, resources, and peer connections that can help districts move from early planning to smoother day-to-day operations.
