NYAPT has issued a statement to the media in response to the now-viral video showing students bullying/harassing a school bus monitor in Greece CSD, NY. Our thoughts go out to Karen Klein, the monitor, and to all in the Greece CSD transportation family. School bus operations are close-knit groups who work with one another to keep our children safe and when one of our partners is hurt in any way, we all feel it.
Our statement reacts to the situation as we saw it on the video and also takes time to call attention to the great service that school bus drivers and attendants provide for our children. It also deplores bullying of any kind on the school bus, suggesting that there “is no place for bullying on the school bus.” It also calls for more training for school bus personnel to ensure they have the skills and practical knowledge they need to respond to similar situations, yet acknowledging that we already do training for drivers and attendants.
The main “take-away” should be that we seek (1) steps to increase the respect that our students show for drivers and attendants as well as (2) ways in which we can learn from this to help prepare our staff and teams to respond and address such situations.
