Governor Signs “Piggy-backing” Law

Governor Andrew Cuomo has SIGNED into law S5525/Little—AA8034/Russell (Click bill #s for copy of legislation) that will allow for piggybacking of contracts among school districts for transportation and other purposes.  The new law is now known as Chapter 308 of the Laws of 2012.

NYAPT supported this legislation in Memoranda to the Legislature and in a letter to the Governor urging his signature of approval.

The new law will provide additional options and flexibility for school districts in the conduct of their business and could lead to costs savings in the future.

NYAPT Members will receive an information brief on this legislation over the next several days.

This law follows on the heels of the Governor’s signing  into law a bill (that we had opposed) that relates to allowing districts to provide transportation for students in the UNIVERSAL PRE-K program.  I have prepared a detailed Q&A on that legislation and will be posting it to the Members Only page over the weekend.

NYAPT continues to monitor the progress of other related legislation over the summer.  We are awaiting action on bill (which we opposed) that allows school districts to provide transportation to students who live within the mileage limits when their parent or guardian is disabled/immobilized and cannot get them to school.
